Even though I'm in NYC where I’ll soon need an ark to cruise down the avenues (thanks to the biblical downpour), Italian seaside escapades are currently front of mind – alongside finding new summery printed panties for my dog Pepper, obviously. Each year, as Italy inches towards its slow, sweet summer shift, I love returning to my favorite corners of this vacation-loving country. First, as always will be the magical island of Capri to visit my dear friend Susanne Thun. We will spend our days sun soaking and full-on meditation at her splendid holiday abode which floats above a sea of patterned maioliche. Next will be a visit to my darling friend Marie Louise Scio’s Mezzatorre Hotel (please check it out, ladies!) where all of my chakras come anew in the thermal baths of magical Ischia – the island that all Roman Emperors went nuts for.
I’m crazy for Sicily so I’ll be heading back this summer again to the very-highly-vibrating, jagged rock island of Pantelleria with fashion editor Sciascia Gambaccini. Lastly, there are several weekends planned in Pesaro, where I'll be eating so many servings of my mother in law's tagliatelle that I might have to skip the swimsuits altogether.
In any case, all of these destinations and more call for a small, tightly edited summer weekend bag packed only with a few basics: tops, swimsuits and then a few key beachy La DoubleJ garments that provide instant glamor seaside dressing. You just put one thing on et voilà, you're good to go.
You say easy glamor, I say kaftan! The easiest thing to throw on before breakfast and in between yoga classes is this silk printed kaftan. Though I love wearing it over a bathing suit, this also works as the most effortless of dresses (I’m looking at you, Amanda). It never cares how much you ate at breakfast and it pairs fabulously with flower shrubs.
When your soon-to-be-beau asks you out, let the Jungle Dress aid you in working your magic – trust me on this one. With a fitted bodice, slight V-neck, handkerchief-style skirt and fringed draped-over panel in the front hinting at the roaring 20s, this one is also a godsend for lounging, lawn walking, cocktails or a dancing night out with the girls. If you're not into fringe, we've got plenty of other easy slip-on dresses you can float around in. Go crazy!
We made it well known that our Halter Top and Circle Skirt go together like strawberries and cream, LA and skinny palm trees, Ciccoli and me. Unbelievably fresh and summery, these two come together just to leave each one of your friends wondering whether they’ve met such an alluringly 50s babe on the big screen before. This is the ultimate strolling-by-the-beach-but-don’t-want-to-show-my-butt outfit! When necessary, drop the skirt and jump into the ocean with the big girl bottoms you have underneath.
This is the go-anywhere, do-anything long sleeved swimsuit. I take it to the beach so as not to get a sunburn or anymore of those annoying sun spots that never go away, into the ocean to go for a swim, at a cocktail bar to go with a flared skirt, and even into a yoga class for instant-printed workout wear. Though being no more than a simple long-sleeved backless suit, I now find it impossible to recall a time before I started wearing it every other day in the hottest months of the year.
