The Sufi Four Surrenders Practice
with Lia Chavez
This is one of my most treasured spiritual practices, which comes to us from the Sufi masters, and I am honored to share it with you here. I recommend this as a core daily practice; the daily practice of the four surrenders facilitates a spiritual posture of surrender to the flow of divine will, which is the essence of our evolutionary moment.
Begin in a comfortable seated position on the floor, with space to bow forward. You can sit in a variation of virasana, hero's pose, with your seat on your heels and a blanket beneath your knees for padding. Take several deep, conscious breaths, allowing your body to relax and your mind to become still.
As we journey through the Four Surrenders, each surrender will be accompanied by three prostrations, physically embodying your devotion and surrender to the Divine. With each prostration, we will say "Il-lah" on the exhale as you bow down and "Al-lah" on the inhalation as you rise, which translates to "there is no God but God."
1. Surrendering Burdens and Responsibilities
Bring awareness to the burdens and responsibilities you carry. Feel their weight upon you.
First Prostration:
- Exhale "Il-lah" as you bow down.
- Say: "I surrender my burdens and responsibilities to the Divine."
- Feel Mother Earth supporting you, pouring your burdens into her.
- Inhale "Al-lah" as you rise.
Second Prostration:
- Exhale "Il-lah" as you bow down.
- Say: "I release what no longer serves me."
- Visualize your burdens being composted by the earth.
- Inhale "Al-lah" as you rise.
Third Prostration:
- Exhale "Il-lah" as you bow down.
- Say: "I trust in the divine plan."
- Feel a sense of lightness and freedom.
- Inhale "Al-lah" as you rise.
Pause for a moment in seated position, embracing the lightness that comes from surrendering your burdens.
2. Surrendering Worldly Stations and Titles
Bring to mind your worldly identities—your roles, titles, and positions.
First Prostration:
- Exhale "Il-lah" as you bow down.
- Say: "I surrender my worldly stations and titles."
- Feel yourself stripped of all labels, returning to your essence.
- Inhale "Al-lah" as you rise.
Second Prostration:
- Exhale "Il-lah" as you bow down.
- Say: "I am not bound by my titles."
- Experience the freedom from societal expectations.
- Inhale "Al-lah" as you rise.
Third Prostration:
- Exhale "Il-lah" as you bow down.
- Say: "I am boundless, nothing can contain me."
- Feel your true, limitless nature.
- Inhale "Al-lah" as you rise.
3. Surrendering Knowledge and the Need to Know
Turn your attention to your accumulated knowledge and desire to understand.
First Prostration:
- Exhale "Il-lah" as you bow down.
- Say: "I surrender my need to know and the knowledge that I've acquired."
- Let your analytical mind rest on the earth.
- Inhale "Al-lah" as you rise.
Second Prostration:
- Exhale "Il-lah" as you bow down.
- Say: "I empty myself of the known."
- Feel your mind clearing of concepts and beliefs.
- Inhale "Al-lah" as you rise.
Third Prostration:
- Exhale "Il-lah" as you bow down.
- Say: "I open to the inflow of Your wisdom."
- Experience yourself as a vessel for divine knowledge.
- Inhale "Al-lah" as you rise.
Pause in seated position, feeling your mind clear and open.
4. Surrendering into Divine Peace
Prepare for the final, complete surrender.
First Prostration:
- Exhale "Il-lah" as you bow down.
- Say: "I surrender into the supreme peace of the Divine."
- Let your entire being melt into the ground.
- Inhale "Al-lah" as you rise.
Second Prostration:
- Exhale "Il-lah" as you bow down.
- Say: "You are everything."
- Feel yourself dissolving into divine presence.
- Inhale "Al-lah" as you rise.
Third Prostration (Extended):
- Exhale "Il-lah" as you bow down.
- Say: "We are One."
- Remain in prostration for a longer moment, symbolizing complete dissolution. Feel yourself as a naked child cradled in her mother's arms.
- Inhale "Al-lah" as you slowly rise.
Return to sitting, absorbed in the profound peace of unity with the Divine.
To conclude, place your hands on your heart. Feel the freedom, nothingness, and deep peace that comes from complete surrender. Slowly open your eyes, carrying this state of divine union with you.
